Jordan: Further protests, increased security likely in Amman after dozens try to storm Israeli Embassy to protest strike on Gaza hospital Oct. 17

Increased security, demonstrations likely in Amman, Jordan, after dozens try to storm Israeli Embassy after strike on Gaza hospital Oct. 17.

Warning

Event

Further protest activity and increased security measures are likely in Amman over the coming days, particularly near the Israeli and US embassies, after health authorities in the Gaza Strip alleged that an Israeli airstrike killed some 500 people at a hospital in the territory on Oct. 17. Israeli officials claimed that a misfired rocket launched by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militants was responsible for the strike on the hospital. Following the incident, dozens of people reportedly attempted to storm the Israeli Embassy in Amman in protest; however, security forces fired tear gas to disperse them. Jordanian authorities asserted that protesters did not successfully storm an embassy in the Rabieh area, claiming that demonstrators who attempted to reach the embassy "were dealt with and removed from its surroundings."

Transport and business disruptions are possible in areas subject to protest activity and heightened security. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out. Attacks targeting Israeli individuals and interests are possible in Amman over the short term.

Advice

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent demonstrations and any related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
