Kosovo: Activists to demonstrate in Pristina, Oct. 23

Activists to hold protest march in central Pristina, Kosovo, 11:00 Oct. 23. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to hold a protest march in central Pristina from 11:00 Oct. 23 to denounce alleged state mistreatment of ethnic Albanians living in Serbia. Participants will march from Zahir Pajazivati Square to the National Theater of Kosovo. It is unclear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Though unlikely, isolated low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Context

Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia remain heightened following a Sept. 23-24 attack in Banjska, northern Kosovo, where gunmen entered from Serbia and attacked local police, killing one. A Serbian politician claimed individual responsibility for organizing the raid; however, the Serbian state denied any connection to the attack.

Advice

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Zahir Pajazivati Square. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
