Nigeria: Protest ongoing near Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt, Oct. 30
Security forces forcibly disperse protesters near Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Oct. 30, following impeachment.
Security forces have reportedly forcibly prevented protesters from accessing the Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt, as of early Oct. 30. Police reportedly used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the mob; Moscow Road leading to the House has been closed off.
Increased security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the coming hours across the city until the situation subsidies. Further violence involving security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the vicinity of the House of Assembly complex to mitigate potential disruptions. Heed instructions from the security forces. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area.
Protesters are reportedly being led by Governor Similanayi Fubara, who is under threat of impeachment. This follows reports of a fire affecting the Rivers State House late Oct. 29 which claimed no casualties; it was allegedly aimed at preventing the impeachment proceedings scheduled for Oct. 30.
