Demonstrations denouncing mining contract between government and First Quantum Minerals likely across Panama through at least mid-November.
Event
Protests denouncing the mining contract between the Panamanian government and First Quantum Minerals will likely continue across Panama through at least mid-November. Members of several social organizations, primarily Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares (SUNTRACS), have launched multiple related demonstrations over the past month, with participants often blocking thoroughfares. On Oct. 20, Congress approved a modified version of the deal amid protest activity denouncing the agreement. Activists also staged numerous protests across the country on Oct. 23 to demand that authorities repeal the contract. Some demonstrations led to confrontations with law enforcement, with security forces firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse crowds. Incidents of theft and vandalism were reported amid the Oct. 23 protests and clashes in the Panama City area, prompting authorities to arrest at least 30 people.
Localized disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely near any additional demonstrations that materialize. Police may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt further clashes.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
