Paraguay: Protesters clash with police in Asuncion Oct. 26

Police clash with demonstrators in Asuncion, Paraguay, Oct. 26; consequent transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Protesting workers who have recently lost their jobs at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam have engaged in clashes with police in central Asuncion Oct. 26. The clashes reportedly began as authorities attempted to forcibly disperse protesters from Avenida Mariscal Lopez near its intersection with Avenida Republica Dominicana; demonstrators were blocking the road in the area. Police have fired tear gas at the protesters.

The protest, heightened security presence, and associated clashes will likely cause transport and business disruptions in the area over the coming hours. Similar demonstrations cannot be ruled out over the short term, and police will probably deploy to the sites of any additional protests that materialize. Further clashes are also possible in central Asuncion, especially along Avenida Mariscal Lopez and near the Palace of Government, where the presidential offices are located.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow for additional transport time. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
