Portugal: Doctors to strike nationwide Oct. 17-18

Doctors to strike in Portugal Oct. 17-18; protest planned in Lisbon Oct. 17. Healthcare disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Healthcare workers affiliated with the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) are planning to strike nationwide Oct. 17-18 over a wage and working hours dispute. Striking workers have also called for a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Health in Lisbon at 15:00 Oct. 17; additional rallies outside medical facilities are possible.

Essential emergency medical services are likely to remain available on strike days; however, the industrial action will prompt disruptions to healthcare services, including a reduction in available services and cancellations of routine appointments. Disruptions could persist following strike days as medical facilities deal with a backlog of patients.

Increased security is likely near protests. Localized transport disruptions are possible if demonstrations are well-attended.

Advice

Confirm medical appointments in Portugal Oct. 17-18. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Heed instructions from authorities.
