Warning

Event

Officials at London Luton Airport (LTN) have indicated that flights will be suspended through at least 15:00 Oct. 11 after an overnight fire at the Terminal Car Park 2. Airport authorities have further advised passengers not to travel to the airport. The flight suspension could be extended at short notice.

The fire began between 21:00 and 22:00 Oct. 10 in a vehicle in the parking area. The subsequent blaze, which has been doused, damaged hundreds of vehicles and caused a partial collapse of the impacted building. The cause of the blaze, believed to be accidental, is under investigation. Approximately 25,000 people have been impacted by the related disruptions. The incident has resulted in severe traffic congestion on routes near the airport.

Lingering flight disruptions are likely even after airport operations resume as airlines work to clear passenger backlog. Disruptions to road travel are likely to persist in the area.

Advice

Confirm flight reservations if traveling via LTN Oct. 11-12. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
