UK: Unionized Go North East bus drivers to strike in North East Oct. 14-20

Unionized Go North East bus drivers to strike in North East, England, UK, Oct. 14-20. Transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Go North East bus drivers affiliated with the Unite union plan to strike Oct. 14-20 over work conditions. Union leaders claim around 1,300 drivers and staff, including engineers and depot crew, from the Consett, Gateshead, Hexham, Percy Main (North Shields), Sunderland, and Washington depots will participate in the walkout.

The labor action will disrupt Go North East bus services in the region. Other operational bus services will likely experience congestion, and there will probably be increased demand for alternative transport, including taxis and private hire vehicles. Organizers have yet to announce demonstrations, though picketing is possible at bus depots and prominent bus stations. A related action occurred Sept. 30-Oct. 6; drivers are threatening an indefinite strike from Oct. 28 if the company fails to address their demands.

Advice

Reconfirm bus schedules. Consider using alternative modes of transportation. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in the affected area. Avoid any protests as a security precaution.
