Bulgaria: Soccer fans to demonstrate in Sofia Nov. 16

Soccer fans to protest in vicinity of Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria, 17:00 Nov. 16. Heightened security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Groups of soccer fans, including self-proclaimed "ultras," plan to demonstrate in front of Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia from 17:00 Nov. 16. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand the resignation of Bulgarian Football Union President Bobi Mihailov over alleged mismanagement. The protest is scheduled to begin two hours before the start of a soccer match between the Bulgarian and Hungarian national teams at the facility. Supporters of local clubs will reportedly gather on streets surrounding the stadium, including Evologi and Hristo Georgievi Boulevard and General Yosif V. Gurko Street. The exact gathering locations and number of activists that will rally in the area were not immediately clear.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the stadium during the protest. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel, as well as between fans of rival soccer clubs, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration as a standard precaution. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
