Germany: Flight operations suspended at Hamburg Airport as police respond to security incident late Nov. 4 /update 1

Flight disruptions likely at Hamburg Airport through early Nov. 5 as police respond to security incident late Nov. 4.

Warning

Significant flight disruptions are likely at Hamburg Airport (HAM) through at least early Nov. 5 as police continue their response to a security incident at the facility. Preliminary reports indicate that an armed individual breached the airport's security perimeter in a vehicle at about 20:00 Nov. 4 and drove onto the tarmac while allegedly holding two children hostage. Hamburg Police and the federal security services have deployed a large number of officers to the scene. Investigators believe the incident arose from a domestic dispute that escalated out of control and is not related to terrorism.

HAM authorities have suspended all incoming and departing flights through at least the end of Nov. 4; however, flight disruptions will probably extend for several hours after operations resume as carriers move to reposition aircraft and work through passenger backlogs.

Avoid the scene of the incident until authorities secure the area and give the all-clear. Contact airlines to confirm the status of specific flights if traveling via HAM through early Nov. 5. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary.
