India: Authorities impose heightened security at airports in New Delhi and Punjab State through Nov. 30 due to threat from activist group

Tight security likely at airports in Delhi and Punjab, India, through Nov. 30 after publicized threat. Air India flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Authorities will maintain a heightened security posture at airports in New Delhi and Punjab State through at least Nov. 30 in response to several potential security concerns, including a threat posted on social media by a leader of the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). The SFJ is an outlawed group advocating that Punjab secede from India and form an independent Khalistan state. The threat specifically warned members of the Sikh community to avoid taking Air India (AI) flights from Nov. 19; it did not, however, provide any indication of action planned by SFJ. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has consequently issued enhanced security checks for Air India passengers as a precaution. The Bureau has also restricted the issuance of visitor entry tickets at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) until Nov. 30 and will not permit visitors to enter the facility.

Officials may impose additional restrictions, including vehicular checks, based on operational needs. Authorities could also expand measures to encompass additional areas, including airports in other major cities, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Associated localized ground transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated security incidents cannot be ruled out.
