Indonesia: Unionized workers to hold protests in cities nationwide from Nov. 7 /update 1

Unionized workers to protest in cities across Indonesia from Nov. 7 over labor policies. Tight security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Workers affiliated with the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) will stage indefinite protests in cities across Indonesia from Nov. 7. Participants demand a 15 percent increase in the minimum wage in 2024 and the rollback of the job creation law that allegedly unfairly benefits foreign investors. Known rallies will take place in the following areas:

  • Nov. 7: Jakarta

  • Nov. 8: Bandung

  • Nov. 9: Banten

  • Nov. 10: Surabaya

While specific details are unclear, gatherings typically occur at or near public squares, government offices, monuments, and along major thoroughfares. A few thousand people will likely join gatherings in Jakarta, while several hundred participants are probable in other prominent cities such as Bandung, Makassar, Medan, Pasuruan, Semarang, and Surabaya. Union leaders have announced that demonstrations will continue until at least Jan. 25, 2024.

Heightened security is certain around well-attended gatherings in urban centers. Likely security measures include road closures and diversions. Localized transport disruptions are probable near gathering venues, especially if activists march on or block roadways. Isolated clashes may occur, especially if authorities forcibly disperse gatherings or activists try to breach security cordons. Rerouting and/or curtailment of public bus services is possible. Increased congestion and demand for public transport may occur as a large number of attendees arrive and leave popular demonstration venues.

Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately. Allow additional time for travel and use alternative routes to circumvent gathering sites. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protests, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
