Japan: Tokyo to organize G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting Nov. 7-8

Japan to host G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Tokyo Nov. 7-8. Main event planned at Iikura Guest House. Increased security almost certain.

Informational

Japan will host the Group of Seven (G7) Foreign Ministers' Meeting at the Iikura Guest House in the Minato area of Tokyo Nov. 7-8. Several foreign delegates from Canada, the European Union, Japan, the UK, and the US will attend the meeting. Officials will discuss several major ongoing issues related to international security. While the primary event will be held at Iikura Guest House, additional official gatherings are possible in Tokyo. Although there were no immediate announcements for such gatherings, activists may hold related demonstrations to draw attention to their grievances. Potential venues include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Diet, foreign embassies, and/or US military facilities in Tokyo.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in parts of Tokyo, particularly near the Iikura Guest House and near stops on the G7's itinerary. Officials will probably set up checkpoints and block roads to facilitate the Foreign Minsters' movements, leading to localized traffic disruptions. Authorities could temporarily close the airspace around Tokyo as foreign delegates arrive and depart the city, causing flight delays at Haneda Airport (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT). Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Allow additional time to reach destinations in Tokyo Nov. 7-8. Seek alternative routes to avoid potential venues for high-level meetings. Plan accordingly for potential flight delays at HND and NRT and possible localized business disruptions. As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
