Malawi: Protests, road blockages reported in Mangochi, Nov. 30
Civil rights activists protesting, blocking roads in Mangochi, Southern Region, Malawi, Nov. 30. Localized disruptions likely.
Protestors led by human rights activist Bon Kalindo are reportedly demonstrating in Mangochi, Southern Region, Nov. 30, against the increased cost of living and the devaluation of the local currency. Reports suggest protesters have erected blockades and police forces have deployed. This is the second protest led by the activist, following similar action in Zomba, Nov. 23.
Localized travel disruptions are likely due to the road blockade. Clashes between police forces and protesters are possible in the coming hours should police move to disperse protesters. The protest action and security personnel response, which could include road closures, will likely result in ground travel and business operation disruptions.
Avoid all protests. Do not drive through road blockades. Plan for road travel delays and reconfirm the status of routes before departure. Heed instructions from security forces. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building.
