Pakistan: Authorities likely to maintain increased security in Dera Ismail Khan Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, following Nov. 13 attack

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in Dera Ismail Khan Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, through at least mid-November after unidentified armed individuals killed at least one person and wounded 12 others in an attack in the region Nov. 13. The assault reportedly targeted the camp office of an oil and gas company in the Darazinda area. Security forces deployed to the area in large numbers following the attack and launched a search operation.

Transport and business disruptions are possible in areas subject to a heightened security presence. Demonstrations may also materialize over the coming days in response to the attack, authorities' security measures, or any related disruptions. Similar attacks are possible in Dera Ismail Khan Division over the short term.

Exercise increased caution if operating in or near Dera Ismail Khan. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Remain polite and cooperative if stopped by security personnel. Seek updates from trusted local sources. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.

There is a high risk of terrorism in Pakistan. Various militant organizations, including the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have repeatedly targeted Pakistani security forces and businesses in critical infrastructure sectors. Pakistani security forces also routinely conduct security operations to clear potential militant hideouts, particularly in the rural parts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Several militant attacks have occurred in Dera Ismail Khan in November. Notably, on Nov. 3, a bomb explosion that targeted law enforcement vehicles in Dera Ismail Khan city killed five people and wounded more than 20 others. Also, on Nov. 7, unidentified assailants killed two police officers and wounded three others in an assault on the camp of a private oil and gas drilling company in the district.
