Pakistan: Political party to begin nationwide political rallies on Nov. 10
PML-N party to hold political rallies in Pakistan from Nov. 10 ahead of 2024 general elections. Increased security likely.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party will commence its nationwide political rally campaign on Nov. 10 ahead of the general elections slated to occur sometime in early 2024. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will lead several rallies across Pakistan. Although further gathering details were not immediately revealed as of Nov. 3, potential gathering sites include political party offices, as well as prominent government buildings, press clubs, sports grounds, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Participation will vary by locale, with the largest turnout likely to occur in local PML-N strongholds, such as Punjab Province. Counterdemonstrations could happen at short notice.
Authorities will probably monitor any such events and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between supporters of rival camps, cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators will likely march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.
As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that may materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
The PML-N's decision to commence a political campaign ahead of the general elections comes after the party held a mass rally to set the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Oct. 21. Nawaz Sharif previously served as Pakistan's longest-serving prime minister. His departure for medical treatment in the UK in 2019 stirred controversy due to allegations of corruption and impacted Pakistan's political landscape.
