Paraguay: Adverse weather forecast across most of the country through at least Nov. 3

Severe weather is forecast across most of Paraguay through at least Nov. 3. The nation's Meteorology and Hydrology Direction (Direccion de Meteorologia e Hidrologia, DMH), has posted an alert for 13 of Paraguay's 17 departments, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, strong winds and potential hail.

The impacted departments include Asuncion, San Pedro, Cordillera, Guaira, Caaguazu, Caazapa, Itapua, Misiones, Paraguari, Alto Parana, Canindeyu, central and northern areas of Central department, and southern areas of Amambay department. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Heavy downpours may trigger flooding in low-lying areas, and strong winds could cause property damage and power outages. Transport disruptions are likely in the impacted areas due to adverse weather. The disruptive weather may cause some delays and cancellations at airports in affected areas. Flooding or snow could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track blockages.

As of early Nov. 2, authorities have reported significant damages in Lambare, Central Department, with flooded roads, property damages, and at least two members of the military missing, after their vehicle was dragged by the floods. Additionally, close to 20,000 users in Asuncion and Central Department were affected by power outages.

Disruptions triggered by inclement weather and resultant hazards, such as flooding or avalanches, could persist well after conditions have improved - it could take days before any floodwaters recede and/or officials clear debris. If there is severe damage to infrastructure, repair or reconstruction efforts may result in residual disruptions.
