Reunion: Adverse weather forecast across much of the territory through at least Nov. 5

Severe weather forecast across much of Reunion through at least Nov. 5. Disruptions to transport, business, and utilities possible.

Warning

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast across much of Reunion through at least Nov. 5. As of Nov. 3, Meteo France La Reunion has issued orange heavy rainfall and thunderstorm warnings (the middle tier on a three-tier scale) across northern and northeastern regions and yellow warnings for northwestern regions. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Recent heavy rainfall has led to rising levels in the Saint-Denis, Pluies, Saint-Jean, and Saint-Suzanne rivers. Several roads in affected areas have been flooded and a landslide occurred on the Salaize road near Bras Citronnier. Schools have been closed in Saint -Suzanne and the road leading to Niagra Falls has been closed as a precaution. Traffic restrictions are also in place along the main coastal road between La Grande Chaloupe and La Possession.

The storms could produce rounds of heavy precipitation and isolated thunderstorm activity. Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.

The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports.

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected area. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
