Sri Lanka: Authorities likely to maintain ongoing increased security presence in parts of Colombo into mid-November due to possible protest activity

Officials in Sri Lanka likely to continue heightened security measures in parts of Colombo into mid-November due to possible civil unrest.

Warning

Authorities are likely to maintain an increased security presence in parts of Colombo into mid-November due to possible protest activity. On Nov. 9, officials heightened security near the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) headquarters in anticipation of a demonstration; police temporarily cordoned off Maitland Place and Vidya Mawatha roads. As of late Nov. 9, it remained immediately unclear if any planned protest activity will occur over the coming days; however, such gatherings remain possible, especially near the SLC headquarters, sports stadiums, prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Reports indicate activists are purportedly demanding the resignation of the SLC committee members amid the ongoing Cricket World Cup tournament and as lawmakers convened in parliament to discuss related legislation.

Officials may use force, including water canons, to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Additional enhanced restrictions, including roadblocks and/or temporary public movement restrictions, could occur. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Heightened security measures are certain to prompt disruptions to transport services. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Remain polite and cooperative if stopped by security personnel for checks. Seek updates from trusted local sources on any rally plans, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions.Heed all official transport and security advisories.
