Critical

Increased security and disruptions are almost certain over the coming hours and days near the US-Canada border as authorities investigate a vehicle explosion that occurred on the Rainbow Bridge border crossing connecting Niagara Falls, New York, and Niagara Falls, Ontario, in the early afternoon of Nov. 22. Previously described as a vehicle incident, reports now indicate that the incident was an attempted explosives attack with that led to the deaths of at least two people in the vehicle another individual was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. In response, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) authorities have significantly increased security, adding additional screening for passengers and vehicles.

As of the afternoon of Nov. 22, all four international border crossings are still closed. The closure impacts the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge. Emergency services are at the scene. All transport near border crossings will likely have additional security measures until authorities end their investigation and give an all-clear.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are almost certain over the coming hours as officials continue to investigate the incident. Lingering disruptions are possible even after the border reopens as authorities work to clear backlogs. Rail disruptions on the Whirpool Bridge cannot be ruled out.

Allow for additional transport time. Seek alternative routes and consider departing for BUF with ample time to navigate security screenings.
