Officials are continuing their response to a high speed vehicle crash near the US-Canada border at the Rainbow Bridge, between Niagara Falls, New York, and Niagara Falls, Ontario, as of early Nov. 23; Rainbow Bridge crossing remains closed. At approximately 11:27 Nov. 22, a car traveling from New York state drove at high speed into a road median near the US border crossing at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing. The scale of the collision prompted broad security responses from US and Canadian authorities: officials closed all border crossings in the area, suspended flights, deployed extra police in cities, and introduced extensive security checks at airports.
Authorities have since stated that no explosives were present in the car, and there is no evidence the incident was linked to terrorism. Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether the collision was accidental or intentional. Two people in the vehicle were killed, and one other person was injured.
Additionally, Amtrak has suspended all cross-border rail service between New York State and Canada. While the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, and Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) were previously also closed, they have since reopened.
