Belarus: Adverse winter weather forecast nationwide through at least Dec. 16

Adverse winter weather forecast across Belarus through at least Dec. 16. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Adverse winter weather is forecast across Belarus through at least Dec. 16. Mixed wintry precipitation is forecast across the country Dec. 13 and heavy snowfall in southeastern regions and lighter snowfall in central and northern regions Dec. 14. Ice is likely to form across the country due to temperatures around freezing Dec. 13-14 and fog is expected in many places Dec. 13. Further wintry precipitation is forecast across much of Belarus Dec. 15-16, with heavy snow and strong winds expected in eastern regions Dec. 15. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to slippery roads and reduced visibility caused by fog and blowing snow.

The Belarus Department of Hydrometeorology has issued an orange (the middle level on a three-tier scale) severe weather warning for heavy snow in southeastern parts of the country Dec. 14 and yellow warnings for fog and ice across the country Dec. 13. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are probable along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are likely, including on secondary and rural roadways in affected areas, as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are probable due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports. Power outages are possible in affected areas.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged electricity outages.
