Burundi: Fuel scarcity persists nationwide as of Dec. 27

As of Dec. 27, fuel shortages persist across Burundi. Transport and business disruptions and related protests possible.

Warning

As of Dec. 27, fuel shortage persists nationwide, with some filling stations closed and long lines of motorists and other consumers forming at those that remain open. Price hikes have been reported on available means of transportation. Officials have attributed the scarcity that began in late November to a lack of currency that has prevented the stockpiling of fuel reserves. It remains unclear how long the shortage may last.

Increased demand at available fuel stations may prompt congestion on nearby roads. Fuel shortages may affect business operations and transport services. Consumer frustration could manifest in the form of sporadic clashes near filling stations or street demonstrations if the shortage becomes protracted.

Plan for fuel shortages and long queues at gas stations. Confirm all ground transport services before travel. Do not buy fuel on the black market. Avoid all demonstrations.
