The Red Taraba rebel group has claimed responsibility for an attack in the border town of Vugizo, Bujumbura Rural Province, near the shared border with DRC, Dec. 22. Rebels carried out a raid on a security outpost in the town around 22:00, killing 20 people and wounding nine more, including security force members and civilians. Authorities have confirmed the incident. Vugizo is located around 20 km (12 miles) north-northwest of the capital, Bujumbura.
Officials will certainly maintain a heavy security presence in the vicinity of Vugizo and the nearby border areas over the coming days. Movement restrictions are likely. Red Tabara militants may also launch further attacks in the near term.
Exercise increased vigilance while operating in the vicinity of Vugizo and the border areas. Anticipate increased security presence and related measures. If possible, avoid crowded areas, including bars, pubs, public squares, bus stations, military installations, and other sensitive areas with a substantial security presence.
Red Tabara is opposed to the central government. It became active in 2015 and is based in the neighboring DRC's South Kivu Province. It is one of the most active Burundian rebel groups and carries out attacks on a regular basis.
