China: Death toll continues to rise following magnitude-5.9 earthquake in Gansu Province late Dec. 18 /update 3

Death toll continues to rise following magnitude-5.9 earthquake in Gansu Province, China, late Dec. 18. Aftershocks likely.

Critical

Authorities in China have reported at least 134 people have been killed, nearly 1,000 others injured, and 14 more missing as of Dec. 20 following a magnitude-5.9 earthquake that occurred in Gansu Province late Dec. 18. Several areas in Gansu and the neighboring Qinghai Province have experienced infrastructural damage; approximately 5,000 buildings have been damaged across both provinces. Roads and electrical and water supply infrastructure have also been damaged in the region, and the tremor also triggered several landslides. Authorities have reportedly drawn rescue operations to a close in Gansu Province and switched their attention to treating survivors and resettling those whose homes have been destroyed. Cold temperatures in the region are also exacerbating the situation, with temperatures as low as -15 C (5 F) recorded in the vicinity of the epicenter overnight Dec. 19-20.

Aftershocks and landslides are possible over the coming days. Further tremors may cause additional damage to weakened structures, particularly in areas near the epicenter. Disruptions to road travel may persist for several days as officials repair and clear blocked routes. Telecommunication disruptions are also possible.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
