Officials responding to aftermath of earthquake in Gansu Province, China, as of early Dec. 19. Casualties reported.

Critical

Emergency crews are responding in the aftermath of an earthquake in Gansu Province as of early Dec. 19. Preliminary reports indicate the incident has purportedly left at least eight people dead and 39 others wounded. Some infrastructure damage has occurred in multiple areas, including Jishishan County. Officials are likely to provide additional updates over the coming hours.

The U.S. Geological Survey has downgraded the earthquake's magnitude from 6.0 to 5.9; however, Chinese media reported the quake at magnitude 6.2.

Aftershocks and landslides are possible over the coming days. Tremors may cause additional damage to weakened structures, particularly in areas near the epicenter. Disruptions to road travel may persist for several days as officials repair and clear blocked routes. Further tremors could also damage power and water supply infrastructure. Telecommunication disruptions are also possible.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
