Minibus drivers known as gbaka are protesting and obstructing road traffic near the Riviera Palmeraie neighborhood in Abidjan as of the morning of Dec. 20. Drivers operating between the Adjame and Bingerville municipalities are observing a work stoppage to denounce illegal taxes imposed by security forces. Police have been deployed in the area. It is unclear whether police attempted to disperse the protesters.
An increased security presence and road congestion will likely persist in the coming hours. Clashes remain possible if protesters refuse to disperse.
