India: Explosion near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi prompts tight security and travel advisory as of Dec. 27

Security tightened at multiple sites in New Delhi, India, as of Dec. 27 following explosion near Israeli embassy. Disruptions possible.

Warning

Authorities are maintaining a heightened security posture at and around the Israeli embassy in New Delhi as of Dec. 27 in response to an explosion at a field behind the embassy the day before. Officials have also tightened security at other Israel-linked buildings like Jewish synagogues and community centers called Chabad Houses. The blast occurred around 17:48 Dec. 26 and caused no damage or casualties. Police are investigating the incident, including a letter found at the scene condemning Israel's ongoing military action in Gaza. Israel has also issued a travel advisory for its citizens in India, recommending that they avoid public displays of Israeli affiliations, large crowds, or visiting places linked to Western, Jewish, and/or Israeli interests. While Israeli authorities have stated the incident may be a possible terror attack, Indian officials have not confirmed the nature and target of the blast.

Enhanced security measures, including vehicle checks and roadblocks, are likely over the coming days. Depending on assessments of any further threats, authorities could also expand measures to encompass additional areas, including New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). Associated localized ground transport disruptions are possible. Isolated security incidents may occur.

Exercise increased caution if operating in or near New Delhi. Avoid government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities, including any official transport and security advisories.
