India: Rally planned in Swami Vivekananda Stadium in Agartala, Tripura State, Dec. 26

Tribal organization Janjati Suraksha Manch has called for a rally at the Swami Vivekananda Stadium in Agartala City, Tripura State, Dec. 26. The action is to demand the removal of tribal people who have adopted Christianity from the Scheduled Tribes list. Organizers expect at least 50,000 participants, although the actual attendance will likely be lower. The event is likely to pass peacefully.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around the main protest site. Although violence is unlikely, isolated scuffles are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse unruly demonstrators. Clashes between activists and counterdemonstrators also cannot be ruled out; some Christian groups have criticized the rally. Transport disruptions may be exacerbated if protesters march on or block roadways near the rally site. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also probable as a large number of attendees reach and leave the venue.
