Indonesia: Village officials protesting outside the People's Representative Council (DPR) building in Jakarta Dec. 5

Protest ongoing outside the People's Representative Council (DPR) building in Jakarta, Indonesia, Dec. 5. Localized disruptions reported.

Informational

Officials from the Association of Indonesian Village Governments (APDESI) are protesting outside the People's Representative Council (DPR) in Jakarta as of the afternoon of Dec. 5 to call for the revision of the Village Law. Several hundred people are participating in the action. Reports indicate that protesters attempted to forcibly break through the DPR's main gate and set fire to banners at the entrance. Authorities have deployed over 1,800 security personnel to the location and used water cannons to douse fires lit by protesters. Participants will likely demonstrate through the evening.

Increased security measures will almost certainly continue around the DPR building and surrounding areas. Localized transport disruptions are ongoing in the vicinity of the protest. Officials have closed parts of Jalan Gatot Subrato Road near the DPR building and have diverted bus services 1B, 1F, 3F, 8ST, 10H, and T11. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible if the latter continues to be overly disruptive. Police could attempt to disperse protesters if they attempt to bypass security barriers.

Avoid the protest site as a precaution. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for security checks. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks; wait for authorities to dismantle them. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
