Elevated seasonal influenza activity reported nationwide in Japan through December. Obtain vaccination; use basic health precautions.

Warning

Public health officials have reported elevated seasonal influenza activity nationwide in Japan, with 969,943 seasonal influenza cases reported by sentinel hospital sites from Oct. 1-Dec. 10. This is compared to 4,040 cases reported over a similar period in 2022. Saitama (65,028 cases) is the most affected prefecture, followed by Hokkaido (64,794 cases), Tokyo (62,483cases), Kanagawa (60,476 cases), Fukuoka (48,576 cases), Chiba (47,257 cases), Aichi (45,584 cases), and Osaka (40,757 cases). Health authorities urge individuals to get vaccinated against influenza, and to take personal protective measures against all respiratory viruses, such as regularly washing hands, wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and social distancing when ill. As disease surveillance continues, additional cases will likely be identified in the coming weeks. This represents the most updated information available as of Dec. 20.

Visit a doctor to ensure vaccination against seasonal influenza. Practice basic health precautions. Seek medical attention if symptoms develop within a week of being in affected areas.

Seasonal influenza activity typically occurs each year towards the end of spring and in winter in Japan, with most activity reported from December-March. Seasonal influenza is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. Symptoms typically appear two days after exposure but can develop up to four days after exposure. Typical symptoms are nondescript, including fever (though not in all cases), cough, congestion, aches, and fatigue. The disease occurs in all age groups but is particularly severe in the elderly or persons with high-risk medical conditions. Influenza vaccinations are recommended yearly since the influenza virus undergoes frequent changes.
