Paraguayan authorities launched a large security operation at the National Penitentiary of Tacumbu in Asuncion early Dec. 18. Some 2.500 members of several security departments, including police and military, are reportedly participating in the operation, which has led to clashes in the facility. Reports indicate that several people have been injured, including at least three civilians, and at least one police officer was killed. Officials have said the situation is now under control, but the operation is ongoing. The operation aims to transfer hundreds of prisoners from the overcrowded penitentiary to other detention centers in the country.
Significant disruptions and heightened security in and around the penitentiary are likely in the coming hours.
