Paraguay: Protest ongoing outside National Congress in Asuncion, Dec. 6, to oppose retirement reform bill

Activists affiliated with numerous organizations, unions, and political parties, have launched a protest outside the National Congress in Asuncion, early Dec. 6. The motive of the demonstration is to oppose a bill that would reform the pension and retirement system in the country. Demonstrators marched from Plaza Uruguaya and have gathered outside Congress; they have said they intend to close nearby roads if the Senate approves the bill in its initial vote.

Transport and business disruptions in downtown Asuncion are likely for the coming hours; heightened security in the area is highly likely. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
