As of Dec. 3, limited damage and casualties reported following magnitude-7.6 earthquake off northeastern Mindanao, Philippines, Dec. 2
As of Dec. 3, authorities have reported limited damage and casualties across Mindanao following a magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck off northeastern Mindanao at around 22:37 on Dec. 2. The temblor has left at least one person dead in Davao del Norte Province, with disaster response personnel reporting some minor damage to infrastructure and homes. Residents in Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces have begun returning to their homes after officials issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of these provinces and then rescinded it several hours later.
Over 600 aftershocks have occurred, some measuring above magnitude-5.0, including several above magnitude-6.0. Further aftershocks and landslides are possible over the coming days. Tremors may cause additional damage to weakened structures, particularly in areas near the epicenter. Disruptions to road travel may persist for several days as officials repair and clear any blocked routes. Further tremors could also damage power and water supply infrastructure.
Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
