Philippines: Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes off northeastern Mindanao Dec. 2; tsunami warning canceled for other countries /update 2

Tsunami warning ongoing in Surigao Del Sur, Davao Oriental provinces, Philippines, canceled in other regions after magnitude 7.6 earthquake.

Critical

Authorities in the Philippines maintain a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces following a severe magnitude-7.6 offshore earthquake off northeastern Mindanao at around 22:37 Dec. 2. Officials state that tsunami waves over 1 meter (2 feet) in height are likely over the coming hours and have urged people in coastal areas of these provinces to move to higher ground. Additionally, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has rescinded its earlier tsunami advisory for coastal regions in the Pacific Rim.

Multiple aftershocks above magnitude 5.0 have occurred, including a magnitude of 6.4, and will likely continue. Significant damage and casualties are also possible.

Vacate multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Plan accordingly for aftershocks. If in coastal areas, move to higher ground.
