Philippines: Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes off northeastern Mindanao Dec. 2; tsunami warning issued for coastal parts of Mindanao /update 1

Tsunami warning issued for Surigao Del Sur, Davao Oriental provinces, Philippines, following magnitude 7.6 earthquake off Mindanao, Dec. 2.

Authorities in the Philippines have issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces following a severe magnitude-7.6 offshore earthquake off northeastern Mindanao at around 22:37 Dec. 2. Authorities have urged people in coastal areas of these provinces to move to higher ground. In addition, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated tsunami waves are possible within 1000 km (621 miles) of the epicenter of the temblor in Malaysia, Palau and Indonesia.

Multiple aftershocks over magnitude 5.0 have occurred, and more aftershocks are likely. Significant damage and casualties are also possible.

Vacate multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Plan accordingly for aftershocks. If in coastal areas, move to higher ground.
