Serbia: Opposition activists demonstrating in Belgrade Dec. 18

Opposition activists protesting in central Belgrade, Serbia, as of early evening Dec. 18. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Opposition activists are protesting in central Belgrade as of early evening of Dec. 18. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged irregularities in the Dec. 17 elections and to demand an annulment of their results. Participants are gathered at the Belgrade City Assembly (2 Dragoslava Jovanovica Street) and plan to march to the Republic Election Commission office (14 Kralja Milana Street.) It is unclear how many demonstrators may attend; images from local media appeared to show several hundred participants.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration area. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or politically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the demonstration sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
