Serbia: Opposition activists demonstrating in Belgrade Dec. 20 /update 2
Opposition activists protest at Republic Election Commission office in Belgrade, Serbia, Dec. 20. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Opposition activists are protesting at the Republic Election Commission office located at 14 Kralja Milana as of late afternoon Dec. 20. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged irregularities in the Dec. 17 elections and to demand an annulment of their results. This marks the third day of protests after opposition supporters gathered at the Republic Election Commission and the nearby Belgrade City Assembly office Dec. 18 and 19; the gatherings appeared to draw several thousand participants, and some demonstrators briefly attempted to force their way into the Republic Election Commission building on Dec. 18.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration area, particularly at the Republic Election Commission and Belgrade City Assembly located at 2 Dragoslava Jovanovica Street; participants may unexpectedly march to the Belgrade City Assembly. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or politically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the demonstration site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
