Heightened tensions, increased security, and opposition protests likely in Belgrade, Serbia, through late December amid election dispute.

Warning

Heightened tensions, increased security, and opposition protests are likely in Belgrade through late December. On the evening of Dec. 24, thousands of opposition activists affiliated with Serbia Against Violence clashed with police and attempted to forcibly enter the Belgrade City Assembly due to an electoral dispute; demonstrators are demanding an annulment of the Dec. 17 election results. Since Dec. 18, Activists have gathered at the Republic Election Commission and the nearby Belgrade City Assembly office daily at 18:00. The gatherings have drawn several thousand participants.

Authorities may implement increased security measures such as security checkpoints near the demonstration area, particularly at the Republic Election Commission and Belgrade City Assembly, located at 2 Dragoslava Jovanovica Street; participants may unexpectedly march to the Belgrade City Assembly. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or politically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the demonstration site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
