Serbia: Opposition activists likely to demonstrate in Belgrade through at least late December /update 3

Opposition activists likely to protest in central Belgrade, Serbia, through at least late December. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists are likely to continue daily protests at the Republic Election Commission office located at 14 Kralja Milana through at least late December. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged irregularities in the Dec. 17 elections and to demand an annulment of their results. Activists have gathered at the Republic Election Commission and the nearby Belgrade City Assembly office daily at 18:00 since Dec. 18; the gatherings appear to have drawn several thousand participants, and some demonstrators briefly attempted to force their way into the Republic Election Commission building on Dec. 18.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration area, particularly at the Republic Election Commission and Belgrade City Assembly located at 2 Dragoslava Jovanovica Street; participants may unexpectedly march to the Belgrade City Assembly. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or politically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the demonstration site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
