Serbia: Opposition activists to demonstrate in Belgrade Dec. 19 /update 1

Opposition activists to protest at City Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia, at 18:00 Dec. 18. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Opposition activists plan to protest at the Belgrade City Assembly (2 Dragoslava Jovanovica Street) from 18:00 Dec. 18. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged irregularities in the Dec. 17 elections and to demand an annulment of their results. This marks the second day of protests after opposition supporters gathered at the Belgrade City Assembly and the nearby Republic Election Commission office Dec. 18; the gathering appeared to draw several thousand participants, and some demonstrators briefly attempted to force their way into the Republic Election Commission building.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration area, particularly at the Belgrade City Assembly and the Republic Election Commission. Participants may unexpectedly march to the Republican Election Commission (14 Kralja Milana). Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or politically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the demonstration site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
