Heightened security measures are likely in parts of Kasserine Governorate through at least late December following clashes between Tunisian security forces and militants in the region Dec. 27. Security forces reportedly killed three militants in a mountainous area of the region near the Algerian border as part of an ongoing counterterrorism operation and also seized weapons.

Groups affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) operate along Tunisia's borders with Algeria and Libya. These groups are active in Kasserine, Kef, Jendouba, Sidi Bou Zid, and Gafsa governorates. While their operational capacity has been degraded over the years, the militant groups can still launch lethal attacks against security forces and foreigners.
