A magnitude-5.1 earthquake occurred in Hawaii County, Hawaii State, at around 17:53 Dec. 4. The epicenter was about 47 km (29 miles) southwest of Hilo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 2 km (1.2 miles), and light] shaking was probably felt throughout southwestern Hawaii. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
