Activists plan to protest in several cities across Australia and New Zealand on Jan. 21. The purpose of the rallies is to denounce Russian President Vladimir Putin. The demonstrations are part of a campaign affiliated with jailed Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny. Participation will vary amongst locations, with the largest crowds expected to be in the low hundreds. Planned demonstration locations include:
Australia
Darwin: Darwin City Civic Park at 10:00
Adelaide: Parliament House at 12:00
Brisbane: King George Square at 12:00
Melbourne: Princes Bridge at 12:00
Perth: South Perth Foreshore at 12:00
Sydney: Sydney Town Hall at 12:00
New Zealand
Wellington: Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa at 12:00
Christchurch: Canterbury Museum at 13:00
Auckland: Britomart Train Station at 14:00
Additional demonstrations are possible in other urban centers.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstrations. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near demonstration sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
