Australia: Port worker strikes planned in multiple cities Jan. 22-30
Port worker strikes to take place in several cities across Australia Jan. 22-30. Shipping and supply chain disruptions likely.
Members of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) are continuing a series of indefinite rolling strikes at DP World terminals across Australia Jan. 22-30 to call for increased pay and better working conditions. Port operations at Brisbane, Fremantle, Melbourne, and Sydney will experience daily 2-hour work stoppages from Jan. 22. The labor actions, initiated in October, have caused disruptions in cargo handling and port services, resulting in a backlog of over 48,000 containers at the affected terminals. Further delivery delays are likely for the duration of the industrial action.
Strike participants may stage demonstrations near port facilities. Authorities will likely increase security near protest venues as a precaution. Localized transport disruptions could occur near demonstrations.
Confirm maritime shipments and port-handling operations at affected facilities. Consider alternative shipping methods for critical freights. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near any rally venues.
