Belarus: Adverse winter weather forecast nationwide through at least Jan. 21

Adverse winter weather forecast across Belarus through at least Jan. 21. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Adverse winter weather is forecast across much of Belarus through at least Jan. 21. Spells of mixed wintry precipitation are expected across the country over the coming days, as well as icy roads and extremely cold temperatures. Heavy snowfall and winds gusting up to 65 kph (40 mph) are expected in eastern regions on Jan. 18 and a mix of snow, sleet, and rain is forecast across southeastern regions Jan. 19 and across most of Belarus Jan. 20-21. Overnight temperatures may reach as low as -18 C (0 F) across parts of Belarus over the coming days and icy conditions are expected in most areas. Gusty winds may combine with snow to cause blizzard conditions in places. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to slippery roads and reduced visibility caused by blowing snow.

The Belarus Department of Hydrometeorology has issued an orange (the middle level on a three-tier scale) severe weather warning for heavy snow and strong winds in eastern parts of the country Jan. 18. An orange warning has also been issued for icy conditions in southern regions Jan. 19. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are probable along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are likely, including on secondary and rural roadways in affected areas, as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are probable due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports. Power outages are possible in affected areas.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged electricity outages.
