Response operations are ongoing in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province, following a landslide that occurred early Jan. 22. The landslide buried around 18 homes in the village of Liangshui, trapping 47 people under the debris. Authorities have reported at least two fatalities and dozens of others remain missing. Around 500 people in the area have been evacuated following the landslide and around 1,000 emergency personnel have been deployed to the scene. Rescue operations are being carried out amid a cold wave that is currently affecting the region.
Lingering disruptions are expected in the area over the coming days as response and recovery operations continue. Localized business disruptions will likely occur in the affected area; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites. Overland transport disruptions are likely due to the damage to the road network caused by the landslide. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where the landslide impacts utility networks.
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
