Wildfire ignites near Floridablanca-Piedecuesta highway in Santander Department, Colombia, Jan. 20; related smoke prompts school evacuation.

Warning

Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire near the Floridablanca-Piedecuesta highway (National Route 45A) in Santander Department as of Jan. 20. The blaze reportedly ignited during the morning hours of Jan. 20 and has burned forested areas in the vicinity of Loma Mesa de Ruitoque. Authorities had brought approximately 50 percent of the fire under control as of the afternoon. Officials did not immediately report any casualties in connection with the fire; however, smoke from the blaze has prompted authorities to evacuate students from the local Gimnasio Saucara school. Authorities have also requested that motorists refrain from using some local routes, including the Floridablanca-Piedecuesta highway, to facilitate the movement of emergency responders who are attempting to extinguish the wildfire.

Lingering transport and business disruptions will likely impact areas within and near the wildfire complex. Authorities may ask motorists to refrain from using additional routes in the area due to fire activity and the needs of emergency responders. Further evacuations are also possible; in the event of additional evacuations, the return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after officials lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected region; road closures and detours could cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Individuals not subject to evacuation orders should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Wildfire smoke may irritate eyes; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
