Georgia: Activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi Jan. 11

Activists to protest at Shota Rustaveli Monument in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 15:00 Jan. 11. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists plan to protest at the Shota Rustaveli Monument (Mikheil Zandukeli Street) in Tbilisi from 15:00 Jan. 11. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the Jan. 9 defacement of an icon at the Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi. Several dozen protesters appeared to confront law enforcement officers at a related protest on Jan. 9. It is unclear how many participants may attend the Jan. 11 gathering.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Shota Rustaveli Monument in the afternoon or evening. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
