Georgia: Activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi Jan. 13 /update 1

Activists to protest at Parliament of Georgia in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 15:00 Jan. 13. Heightened security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Alt Info movement plan to protest at the Parliament of Georgia in Tbilisi from 15:00 Jan. 13. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the Jan. 9 defacement of an icon at the Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi; demonstrations denouncing the defacement have occurred daily since the incident. Several dozen protesters appeared to confront law enforcement officers at a related protest on Jan. 9. The number of participants that may attend the planned Jan. 13 gathering was not immediately clear.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Parliament of Georgia in the afternoon or evening of Jan. 13. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
